Having A Punt Overseas

If you are an aussie looking to have a punt overseas there are options for this to be possible, but you must beware that this can be against the terms of conditions of the bookmakers so if caught out they might have the right to cancel any winning bets.

Some of us just like the punt a little too much and cannot go a month or two without

It is possible in some countries to go into physical betting shops or even use the apps and websites of bookies in that country.

The below is for information purposes as I would not recommend anyone betting with Australian agencies overseas because of the ramifications.

 

TERMS AND CONDITIONS EXAMPLE

The below is an excerpt from the TAB terms and conditions as at 7/7/19 

-Prohibited Jurisdictions

-Residents of, or persons located in any country other than Australia and New Zealand (and any other jurisdiction agreed between TAB (at its absolute discretion) and you on a case-by-case basis) ( Prohibited Jurisdictions), are not permitted to open, access, bet through or deposit into or withdraw funds from any TAB Account, or otherwise transact with TAB in any manner contemplated by these Terms and Conditions.

-Tabcorp reserves the right to reject, at its sole discretion, any wagers, withdrawals, deposits or transactions made on a TAB Account from any Prohibited Jurisdiction for any reason.

-You agree that you will not:

-access, bet through, deposit into or withdraw funds from, or otherwise transact using your TAB account while residing or located in a Prohibited Jurisdiction; or

-deposit into or withdraw funds from, or request a withdrawal from your TAB Account, either from or to an account or facility associated with a bank or any similar institution, in any Prohibited Jurisdiction, by any means, including, but not limited to, use of debit/credit card or internet banking.

-You acknowledge that Tabcorp may, at any time, at its sole discretion, refuse to open or restrict, suspend or close your TAB Account, refuse to accept wagers, deposits or withdrawals or otherwise transact with you.

-Tabcorp reserves the right to reject any transactions made on your TAB Account from a Prohibited Jurisdiction

VPN NEEDED

Unfortunately, a VPN is needed to be able to access the Australian bookmaker websites due to government regulations.

The VPN my group used on a recent trip was NORD VPN although there are many other options out there that will give similar results but I would recommend not using one of the free apps out there just because they often don’t have Australia in their IP address option or as many featured ones.

An expensive VPN is not needed either just one that will give you the following abilities

–  small subscriptions or ability to cancel anytime

– ability to choose Australia as an IP address

– are in the app store as well as on pc (if you also have a laptop)

– multiple addresses within Australia to choose from (in the event that one address is blocked)

-multiple devices (if you one want to pay for it once for all in your party)

HDMI CORD (CHOMECAST/APPLE TV) IS YOU WANT TO WATCH ON THE BIG SCREEN

Every punter likes to watch the game or race while overseas and even though phones are getting bigger these days nothing compares to watching the game on the big screen.

Be sure to bring a HDMI cord to connect your laptop to the big screen or bring your apple tv to be able to

 

IF USING YOUR PHONE SOME WEBSITES USE YOUR TIME SETTING ON YOUR PHONE SO DAYS RACES WILL BE DIFFERENT

One of my mates was really struggling with this on the beteasy website.

Because in the USA the massive time difference means that ‘todays racing’ is actually ‘tomorrows racing’ on the website.

A quick fix for this is to change the time on your phone back to Australia time zone just for punting time.

 

CANNOT USE APPS NEED TO USE WEBSITE

Most betting apps require you to have your location settings activated to ensure you are in Australia but you can just use the website for the specified bookie in your phones web browser.

 

YOU CAN STREAM SKY RACING ON BET EASY OR TAB

Watching the Big race can be hard overseas without the local TAB pub to go to.

Using a VPN it is possible to watch the skyracing channels on the TAB or BetEasy website.

This can also work on mobile

 

REMEMBER WHEN WEEKEND IN AUSTRALIA IS BECAUSE WITHDRAWALS MAY TAKE LONGER

When in a different time zone it is easy to forget when the Australian weekend starts and finishes just be aware of this so your not stuck with no funds overseas.

 

WITHDRAWALS VIA BOOKIES OWN ATM CARD BE AWARE OF THE EXTRA OVERSEAS WITHDRAWAL FEES YOU COULD INCUR

While the bookies cards can be a fantastic way of getting some of your punting bankroll straight away especially on weekends while overseas this can become very costly

Be sure to check the product disclosure statement or terms and conditions of your card before you make a withdrawal with them.

For example

The Available Balance on your Card is in Australian dollars. Transactions made in a currency other than Australian dollars will be subject to the prevailing Mastercard exchange rate at the time plus a 2.99% foreign exchange fee.

 

Example of Foreign Exchange Fee:

• You make a purchase from a merchant located outside Australia (e.g. USA);
• At the time, Mastercard’s prevailing exchange rate is US$1.00 = $0.95 Australian;
• You spend US$200.00;
• The Australian dollar amount is US$200.00 x $0.95 = $190.00;
• The foreign exchange fee is therefore 2.99% x $190.00 = $5.68

In addition to the above foreign exchange fee the atm you are using may have an additional charge.

In Las Vegas this atm withdrawal fee can be up to $15

 

 

 

BET365 WILL NOT WORK

Bet365 unfortunately are too clever for me and no matter how I tried to work around it or which VPN I used they won and would not let me onto their website.

Whenever accessing their website it was a continuous loading screen that never ended. There was absolutely no access, not the cashier or even for 1 bet.

Thinking it was just my problem I asked the 2 mates I was with and none of us could get it to work.

IF YOUR IN THE UK OR YOUR VPN IS DIRECTED THROUGH THE UK, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO BET LIVE(IN-PLAY) ON BETFAIR

If in the UK you can use betfair to place bets live with no issues and with access to various AFL, NRL and horse racing markets.

Although they don’t have as many markets as Australian bookies this would be the best way to bet on the AFL without the risk of your bets being cancelled.

You can also bet live (in-play) with betfair on the computer without the need for a costly call back to Australia.

If your using a VPN to direct you through the UK it is possible but please be aware that you could be subject to the same scrutiny that the bookies have for betting in prohibited countries.

 

FOXTEL NOW DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK WITH ALL VPNS EVEN WITH NORD VPN SOME SERVERS WOULD WORK WHILE OTHERS DID NOT

Both me and a fellow traveller have Foxtel now accounts, we found that some vpns would not work to get access to Foxtel.

This could just be that we did not give it time or clear the cache.

We were both using Nord VPN and with Nord you could select from a range of different IPs from numerous main Australian cities.

 

REMEMBER TO BE ON WIFI TO NOT SUFFER HUGE ROAMING COSTS

Please check with your network provider on roaming costs.

I have previously in my younger days paid the price for this by leaving my roaming on for google maps only to come home to a $1100 phone bill.

GET YOUR HEAD AROUND THE DIFFERENT BOOKIES WEBSITES

I’m sure I’m not the only one who uses the bookies apps 99.9% of the time.

Using the websites instead of the apps can be quite annoying at first and will take a bit of getting used to. If you’re someone that has a punt on every race this can pose a huge problem in the busy racing times.

Get used to the website on at a stage before your Saturday race day to make sure you don’t miss a race.
